You just need to plant something in my head and I will not rest until I find it.
I recently watched Netflix and saw the Eric Khoo Docufiction production “ Wanton Mee “
I called my Makan Kaki’s urgently.
“We have to go to Tanglin Halt urgently to eat Singapore’s best wanton mee!!!”
“Dude it’s almost 1 am. Why ? “
“In “Wanton Mee”, Koh Boon Pin said so !”
“Err …. that’s a line in the movie script right ?”
“He looked serious !!”
“And Koh Boon Pin said soon these stalls will all disappear…..”
“He also said if we are not careful we will lose our souls .………………..”
“Dude it’s late let’s talk tomorrow ……..”
“Soon !! Did you hear me ??!!!Boon Pin said soon it will disappear ………!!!”
In the movie, Koh Boon Pin plays a frustrated introverted chappie who feels that life is getting away from him.
He looks pained and constipated throughout the whole movie.
And I’m thinking … Dude why don’t you just relax , go clear your bowels. Maybe take a chill pill and a few mouthful of fibres?
And granted, when he made that earth shattering statement about Guangzhou Mian Shi Wanton Mee being the best wanton mee in Singapore cos it was in his hood, he was trying to impress the young girl Claire who, and I am not an expert on this, I am reasonably certain he was very interested in jumping her bones.
But he declared it the best wanton mee in the most earnest and intense expression, like his life depended on it.
My Wanton Mee Fix
Tanjong Rhu Wanton Mee
My go to wanton mee fix used to be Tanjong Rhu Wanton Mee at 4A Tanjong Batu near to the Guillemard area.
It used to be in a small Coffeeshop called the Chin Sin Huat Eating house where the only other stall was the famous Tanjong Rhu Pau (Chin Wah Bak Pau).
The wanton mee stall has since relocated to the hawker centre right behind that coffee shop.
Dajie Wanton Mee
Later on in life, our regular breakfast fix was at Dajie Wanton Mee at the corner of Sam Leong Road at Jalan Besar.
Then Dajie retired several years ago and we found ourselves Wanton Mee orphans again.
Koung’s Wanton Mee
For the last year or so, I found my fix at Koung’s Wanton Mee in Geylang.
It is definitely my current fave or at least one of them.
6th Avenue Wanton Mee
A recent pleasant discovery has been 6th Avenue wanton mee.
It’s very good except that the Char Siew is too dry for my liking but all other aspects of it is above average.
Ah Wing’s Wanton Mee at Empress Road.
Another recent discovery. The couple behind this stall hails from Hongkong and it is very near Hongkong standard which is very high indeed for Wanton Mee.
I still prefer the Singapore style overall but if I craved the Hongkong style, Ah Wing’s will be my go to place.
Guangzhou Mian Shi Wanton Mee at Tanglin Halt
And so we found ourselves on a balmy early evening at 5pm making a bee line for Guangzhou wanton mee.
Why so early ? Because Koh Boon Pin was lamenting in the movie that these stalls may disappear soon so I didn’t want to take a chance.

It’s old school for sure
There was no queue at 5pm and we collected our food in all of 5 minutes.
There was silence while we tucked in.
Then everyone made polite noises about how they liked certain specific aspects of it.
As for this OCD Dog?
