La Picara- Bonifacio Global City Manila

I have always told friends that when you come to Manila, you must try their Spanish restaurants.

The Philippines was a colony of Spain for more than 300 years and this has resulted in a deep Spanish influence until today in its champions of industries, lifestyle and certainly its cuisine.


Spanish colonization began with the arrival of Miguel Lopez de Legazpi’s expedition on February 13, 1565 from Mexico. He established the first permanent settlement in Cebu.

Spanish rule ended in 1898 with Spain’s defeat in the Spanish- American War.

While there are few Filipinos today who are of pure Spanish ancestry in the Philippines, the Spanish influence remains profound.

It’s no surprise then that the level of Spanish cuisine in the Philippines is at a very high level.

Spanish Restaurants in Manila

I have savoured the delights of good Spanish restaurants in Manila like Rambla, Terry’s Bistro, Cirkulo, La Tienda to name a few.

All of them are good in their own way.

I think every one of the Spanish restaurants I tried in Manila triumphs the top Spanish restaurants in Singapore.

La Picara in BGC

This time around, we went to a restaurant called La Picara (meaning “the Rogue” in Spanish) in Bonifacio Global City, the new business centre of Metro Manila, not far from Makati.


The surroundings was not lavish but was bright and simple, homely decor.

The people behind La Picara –
first-time restaurateurs Isabel Calvo and Architect Felipe (long name: Felipe Antonio Díaz de Miranda Fernández de Molina).

Jamon Iberica Blazquez

Finely sliced iberico jamon ham eaten with home made rice crackers.

Baby Eggplant Salad

Toasted baby eggplants tossed with assorted greens, cherry tomatoes and mangchego cheese in a classic balsamic dressing.

Callos a la Manilena

Ox tripe stew with a delightful onsen egg and fried kangkong vegetable.

Sisig Pibil Tacos

The flavours of Mexico with the beloved Philippine Sisig in a taco.

These came whimsically nestled in a wooden log.

Salsa Verde Lapu Lapu

Named after Cebu’s legendary chieftain, the lapu-lapu or grouper is among Asia’s most sought-after reef fish.

Lapu Lapu fillet is served with a clams and green curry sauce.

Chilli Crab Paella

Crusty Paella cooked with soft shell crab tempura with a spicy dressing.

Angus Beef Ribeye

A medium rare Angus grilled striploin came beautifully plated with grilled potatoes and delectable grilled peppers.

Glazed Iberico Pork Ribs

Iberico pork ribs sits on top of a bed of mashed purple potato purée.

Pluto Flan De Cuoso

Their version of the classic Leche Flan, a custard typically paired with a rich caramel sauce.
